Definition
The lottery commission is the percentage a retailer earns on lottery tickets sold; the rest of the sales belong to the lottery.
Because most of each sale is owed to the state, lottery sales should be recorded in a liability account, with only the commission shown as income. Otherwise sales are overstated and margins look far too low.
