Definition
Tobacco excise tax is a per-pack or per-unit tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products, usually paid through the distributor.
It is often stamped or included in the invoice cost. Because tobacco is a large part of store sales but carries a small margin, getting the tax and cost treatment right matters for category margin.
