Modisoft Competitors and Alternatives: What the Names on Those Lists Really Replace

Lists of Modisoft alternatives mix very different products. Some replace the register, some replace the back office and some serve other kinds of retail. This page explains how to read them, which questions to ask and what your books need whichever you pick. We do not sell or rank any of them.

Quick answer

What are Modisoft competitors and alternatives?

Modisoft is a cloud POS and back office, so alternatives depend on which part you want to replace. Names that come up include PDI and CStoreOffice for the back office, and Gilbarco Passport and Verifone Commander at the register. Compare the same layer, ask for a sample on your own data, and check what your books need.

Why "Modisoft alternatives" lists can mislead

Search for Modisoft competitors and you will get lists that put very different things side by side. Modisoft describes itself as a cloud POS and back office, so a true alternative depends on how much of it you use. The facts here come from each vendor's own descriptions, and products change, so confirm current details with the vendor. We are not part of Modisoft or any vendor named, and we do not recommend one.

Know which layer you would replace

Modisoft combines the register and the back office in one system. Many alternatives replace only one of the two. A list that sets a register next to a back office is not comparing like with like, so first decide whether you want to change the register, the back office or both.

Names you will see

PDI Technologies sells back-office software and other products. CStoreOffice is a cloud back office from Petrosoft, which says it connects to an existing register. Verifone describes its Back Office as cloud-based and working with the Commander site controller. Gilbarco says its Passport register works with dispensers of any brand. Each replaces a different part.

Some entries serve other buyers

Several lists include software for fuel distributors, delivery dispatch or other kinds of retail. They may be good products, but they answer a different question from yours. Check who the product is built for and whether station owners like you use it.

Moving the register is a bigger job

Because Modisoft runs the register, replacing it can also mean new hardware, a new card processor and retraining staff. Those costs and risks belong in the comparison, not only the subscription price. Our guide to moving off Modisoft covers the books side of that change.

What does not change

Whichever system you choose, its totals still have to reach QuickBooks Online, tie to the bank and carry the right treatment for lottery, sales tax and card fees. A new system can make some of that easier, but it does not remove the work. A sample month from each option is worth more than a feature list.

How to use this page

To compare the names side by side, go to the names and what to ask. To see the common mistakes, go to where it goes wrong. For the books side of a move, read moving off Modisoft and switching to Modisoft. If you want a team to keep the books steady, what we do explains how.

How we help while you compare

1

Check what each option exports

We read sample reports and tell you whether the totals map cleanly to your accounts.

2

Cost the books side

We tell you how much reconciliation work each option leaves with you.

3

Plan the changeover

If you move, we line up the old and new systems so no day is lost.

4

Stay neutral

We earn nothing from any vendor, so we only comment on the books.

A simple way to run the comparison

1

Name the layer

Decide whether you are replacing the register, the back office or both.

Modisoft covers both in one system, so say which parts you actually use.

Lists mix these layers, so name yours first.

2

List what you use today

The Modisoft reports your accountant relies on.

Add the extras you depend on, such as lottery, scan data or the apps.

These are what any alternative must replace.

3

Ask each vendor for the same sample

The same day or month, in each system's own reports.

Like-for-like samples make the comparison fair.

Ask what hardware and processing changes would be needed.

4

Send the samples to us

We check which ones map to your books cleanly.

Some look good in a demo but export badly.

We tell you what each would change for reconciliation.

5

Decide on cost and support

Which is yours to weigh, with the books answer in hand.

Count setup, hardware and training, not only the subscription.

We do not recommend a product.

Where comparing alternatives goes wrong

Comparing across layers

A register is judged against a back office.

Believing a feature list

A vendor says it reports lottery, but not in the form your books need.

Ignoring the export

Nobody checks whether the totals map to QuickBooks accounts.

Forgetting history

The new system cannot bring in or keep the old data.

Counting only the subscription

Hardware, processing change and training are left out.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It depends which part you mean. For the back office, names that come up include PDI and CStoreOffice. At the register, Gilbarco Passport and Verifone Commander. Modisoft combines both, so few alternatives replace the whole thing.
PDI is best known for back-office software, so it can replace that part. Check whether it works with your register, and see Modisoft vs PDI.
It is a cloud back office from Petrosoft, so it can replace the back-office part. Petrosoft says it connects to existing registers, so ask which register yours would use.
It depends on your store, pumps, support and cost. We do not sell or rank any, so ask each vendor for a sample on your own data.
It depends on the cutover. Moving off Modisoft explains what to save and how to avoid gaps.
See switching to Modisoft for what to save and how to start clean.
We work from the reports your system produces and your QuickBooks Online file. We have guides for several of them.

Real US-based contractors. Same team, same operational discipline that we now bring to gas stations. Construction is a different vertical - but the muscle (multi-stream books, cost reconciliation, niche specialization) is the same one stations need.

"They didn't just record transactions and call it a day. They built a custom chart of accounts around how a remodeling company actually runs, did a full catch-up on years of bookkeeping inside QuickBooks Online, and now stay on top of my monthly bookkeeping and payroll."

"Sahil and his team have been handling the bookkeeping and job costing for my painting business. They've done a great job cleaning up my books, using integrations to give me accurate, timely job costing and solid weekly data. Reliable, and the team is very detailed."

"They rebuilt the whole thing from the ground up, with real job costing, WIP, and retainage."

"They set the accounts up properly first, then cleaned up everything I never entered."

Rolian Rolian
Owner, Overtime Electric

"When I came to them I had no financial structure in place at all. No job costing, no WIP tracking, books were behind, no real way to tell if any job was actually making money. They came in, did a full cleanup, and set up job costing and WIP tracking inside QuickBooks."
