Modisoft vs Verifone: How to Compare Them for Your Gas Station

Modisoft and Verifone are often put side by side, but they are built differently. This page compares them by layer, explains what each is generally used for, gives you the questions to ask each vendor, and lists what your books need whichever way you go. We sell neither and we give no verdict.

Quick answer

How do I compare Modisoft and Verifone?

Compare by layer, not by brand. Modisoft is a cloud POS and back office in one system. Verifone makes the Commander site controller, the Topaz and Ruby2 registers and card devices, and offers a cloud Back Office. Ask about your pumps and fuel brand, support, total cost and report exports. Your books need the same checks either way.

Modisoft vs Verifone: questions to ask, with no verdict

Owners compare these two when they buy a site, replace equipment or get a quote that mentions both. They are not like for like. Modisoft describes itself as a cloud POS and back office with inventory, reporting, fuel and lottery management and daily reconciliation. Verifone describes the Commander as combining site, payment and forecourt control, and offers registers, card devices and a cloud Back Office. Facts here come from each vendor's own descriptions and change over time, so confirm current details with the vendor. We are not part of either, and we do not sell or rank them.

One system or several parts

Modisoft puts the register and the back office in one cloud system. Verifone sells separate parts: a site controller, registers, card devices and a back office. Neither approach is better by default. It changes who you call, how many contracts you hold and where a problem can hide.

What each is generally used for

Modisoft is generally used as a store's register and back office together. Verifone's Commander is generally used at the site to control pumps, payments and the register, with reports passed to a back office. Which one fits depends on your pumps, your fuel brand and how many stores you run.

Check your fuel brand and processor first

Branded sites can have equipment or software requirements, and a card processor may support some devices and not others. Ask your fuel supplier and processor in writing what they approve before you compare anything else. A refusal after installation is costly to reverse.

Compare the whole cost

A subscription is one line. Hardware, installation, card processing changes, training and the time to move all count. Ask each vendor for the full cost of the first year and what changes after it, in writing, so the quotes can be compared fairly.

What does not change

Whichever system you choose, its totals must reach QuickBooks Online, tie to the bank and treat lottery, sales tax and card fees correctly. A new system can make some of that easier but it does not remove the work. A sample month from each option is worth more than a feature list.

How to use this page

To compare the parts, go to the questions to ask. To see where a comparison or a move goes wrong, go to where it goes wrong. For each system on its own, read Modisoft back office and Verifone Commander. If you want a team to keep the books steady through a change, what we do covers it.

How we help while you compare

1

Read the sample reports

We look at reports from each system and tell you whether the totals map cleanly to your accounts.

2

Cost the books side

We tell you how much reconciliation work each option would leave with you.

3

Plan the cutover

If you move, we agree a switch date and save the last reports from the old system.

4

Stay neutral

We earn nothing from either vendor, so we only comment on the books.

A simple way to run the comparison

1

Name what you want to change

Decide whether you are changing the register, the back office, the site controller or all of them.

Modisoft combines two layers and Verifone sells them separately, so say which parts you actually need.

Lists mix these layers, so name yours first.

2

Ask both vendors the same questions

Use the same list, in the same order.

Ask what is included, what costs extra, who supports it and what it costs in total.

Ask for answers in writing.

3

Check your fuel brand and processor

Confirm what they approve.

A refusal after installation is costly to reverse.

Do this before you place any order.

4

Ask for a sample on your own data

The same day or month, in each system's own reports.

Like-for-like samples make the comparison fair.

Send them to us and we check which map to your books cleanly.

5

Decide on cost and support

That part is yours to weigh, with the books answer in hand.

Count hardware, installation, processing and training, not only the subscription.

We do not recommend a product.

Where comparing them goes wrong

Comparing across layers

A whole system is judged against one part of another.

Believing a feature list

A vendor says it reports lottery, but not in the form your books need.

Ignoring the export

Nobody checks whether the totals map to QuickBooks accounts.

Skipping the fuel brand check

The equipment is bought and then refused.

Counting only the subscription

Hardware, installation and processing changes are left out.

Forgetting history

The old system's data is lost at the switch.

That depends on your setup and both vendors, so get written confirmation from each before you buy.
Which equipment they approve, whether the change needs their sign-off, and whether any program terms depend on the equipment you run.
We pick a switch time, save the final old reports, trace both settlement streams and review the transition month closely.
Yes. We work from the reports each produces and your QuickBooks Online file, and we never need your login.

"They didn't just record transactions and call it a day. They built a custom chart of accounts around how a remodeling company actually runs, did a full catch-up on years of bookkeeping inside QuickBooks Online, and now stay on top of my monthly bookkeeping and payroll."

"When I came to them I had no financial structure in place at all. No job costing, no WIP tracking, books were behind, no real way to tell if any job was actually making money. They came in, did a full cleanup, and set up job costing and WIP tracking inside QuickBooks."
